SP flays Maya for supporting division of UP

Uttar Pradesh’s main Opposition Samajwadi Party today opposed the division of the state into four smaller states as suggested by Chief Minister Mayawati. - Look where we are! - Left seeks BJP support to oppose disinvestment - Amar seeks Congress" stance on Dadri spat - Setback for Reliance Power"s Dadri plant - Hai Ram! - MNS MLAs attack Azmi over taking oath in Hindi Leader of the opposition in state assembly, Shivpal Singh Yadav, said the SP favoured balanced development in UP rather than its division. “We want that UP retains its political strength,” he told journalists. The chances of intervention by the central government in the affairs of smaller states would increase as they depend upon the Centre for funds,” he added. He gave the examples of newer states like Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Uttarakhand to buttress his point claiming that nothing had changed for these states and they continued to grapple with poverty, unemployment, corruption and lack of resources. Yadav observed that the question of the division would not arise in the first place, if good governance was delivered, corruption was kept under control and the development agenda was kept intact. He alleged that Mayawati was raking the issue to divert the people’s attention from unemployment, poverty, inflation and corruption. “She has spent a major portion of the exchequer on monuments and statues, and is now demanding a special package for development,” he maintained. Mayawati recently wrote two letters to the Prime Minister supporting bifurcation of UP into four smaller states viz Purvanchal (east UP), Bundelkhand and Harit Pradesh (west UP) out of UP for “better governance” and “welfare of people.”
