Riding on the rally

With markets moving up on the disinvestment buzz, Smart Portfolios too registered steady gains last week. It was after a while that all fund managers participated in the markets. While Phani Sekhar and Praveen Panjwani were seen re-building their portfolios, Amar Ambani and Ajay Parmar continued with their churning process. - Big gains for Smart Portfolios - "Bottom-up market ripe for investors" - Steady start for Smart Portfolios II - Small-cap route to returns - "Markets fairly valued" - "Mid-caps trading at attractive valuations" In the week under review, fund managers executed a total of 30 trades, of which 22 were on the buy side. At the net level, these four fund managers cumulatively acquired shares worth Rs 2.95 lakh. Praveen Panjwani was the most aggressive buyer, with all buy trades totaling Rs 2.58 lakh. Ajay Parmar and Amar Ambani continue to remain a step ahead of the Smart Portfolios benchmark for the second week in a row. While an investment of Rs 10 lakh in the benchmark S&P CNX 500 index is today valued at Rs 10.72, a net return of 7.18 per cent, Parmar and Ambani saw their portfolio value appreciate by 7.87 per cent and 7.38 per cent, respectively. POCKETING GAINS Ajay Parmar Head Research Institutional Equities, Emkay Ajay Parmar executed seven trades last week, four of which were on the sell side. He exited from IVRCL Infrastructures for an average gain of 3.24 per cent. Parmar also booked partial profits on his investment in Coromandel Fertilisers and Shree Cements, 10.51 per cent and 2.46 per cent, respectively. Meanwhile, he has added IVR Prime to his portfolio. Overall, he was a net seller of stocks worth Rs 10,546. Parmar now holds 20 stocks in his portfolio, of which 13 are trading above his cost price. Phoenix Mills, Sesa Goa and Torrent Pharma with gains in excess of 20 per cent each are the top performing counters. On the other hand, TV18, Anant Raj Industries and Hinduja Ventures with losses in the range of 13-22 per cent are the laggards. His net worth is now at Rs 10.79 lakh, and he holds cash of Rs 24,000. He exited from MRF, Sesa Goa and RNRL for gains of 30.20 per cent, 23.78 per cent and 19.26 per cent, respectively. His fresh investments are M&M Financial, Shrenuj & Co and IFCI. His weekly sales outpaced his buys by Rs 33,463. Ambani now has 16 stocks in his portfolio, of which 10 are trading above his purchase price. Dhampur Sugar, IDBI Bank and OnMobile Global with gains of 13-25 per cent are his top picks. Indiabulls Securities and PVP Ventures are down 33.80 per cent and 28.70 per cent, respectively. Ambani"s portfolio value is now worth Rs 10.74 lakh, and his cash levels are up marginally at Rs 2.91 lakh compared to Rs 10.74 lakh last week. Jet Airways, Cipla, Bharat Forge and Allahabad Bank are some of his recent picks. He holds 19 stocks in his portfolio, of which CMC, Gujarat State Petronet and VIP Industries are the outperformers. The laggards are Transport Corporation, Bharat Forge and IndusInd Bank. Panjwani"s net worth is now worth Rs 10.01 lakh, and he still holds Rs 1.92 lakh cash.
